Pacemaker Battery Life and Replacement
Pacemaker batteries are designed to last many years, typically between seven and fifteen years, depending on device usage and pacing demands. Battery longevity is a critical aspect of pacemaker management and requires regular monitoring.
During routine follow-up visits, physicians assess battery status using specialized programming devices. These checks provide ample warning before battery depletion occurs, allowing replacement procedures to be scheduled safely.
When a battery reaches the end of its lifespan, the pulse generator is replaced while the existing leads are often left in place if they are functioning properly. Generator replacement is a less invasive procedure than initial implantation and usually involves a shorter recovery time.
Patients may feel anxious about battery replacement, but the process is well-established and carries low risk. Continued monitoring ensures uninterrupted pacing support.
Battery advancements continue to improve device longevity, reducing the frequency of replacement procedures over a patient’s lifetime.
